Rhema School, Uganda

Overview:

A Christian project to help support the work of Rhema Junior School to help children in Kampala, Uganda. New Life Church organised a trip in July 2006 to help support this important relief for AIDS orphans & to encourage the teaching staff.

Background:

RHEMA Junior School Child Sponsorship programme was started in Nakulabye Slum with the aim of educating orphans and other disadvantaged children mainly due to HIV/AIDS problems.
These children are not able to go to school because they have no one to take them or fund their attendance. As a result many opt to become street children and survive by eating from dust bins and begging.
Nakulabye is approximately 3km away from Kampala City, the capital city of Uganda. It has a population of 156,000 people per square km).

Current Status:

During 2005 the number of children at Rhema School increased from 123 to 200 and we expect it to continue increasing. In 2006 a building project is planned to extend to a building that will house 500 children in 10 classrooms; funds allowing.
The children at Rhema School are being well taught which is making a remarkable difference in their lifestyle & skills such that the rest of children, youths and adults in the community are beginning to admire the school. This is helped by the fact that we enclosed the school with a small wall and bridged a stream so that more children have access to the school.
AIDS continues to be a big problem in the community; two school children died in 2005.

One of the children ‘in their own words’:

“My name is Joseph Safali”: I am 5 years old and I am in the Nursery. My mother and Father are still alive but they are always sick. They are weak and cannot work any more. Sometimes we sleep hungry. I enjoy food at school during break time. We sing and learn. My brother Jonah is 7 years and is not able to go to school because of lack of support. When I grow up I want to be a driver.

How can you help?

We are organising a multi-skilled team from New Life Church to visit Bernard & the teaching team in July 2006. We need to raise the funds for transport & accommodation (est. cost £4,000).
This visit is looking to provide:
- Physical labour & support for the building project; Admin advice & help securing funds;
- Advice & encouragement for the teaching staff; Musical training for all helpers;
- Fun for the children & encouragement for all involved.
In addition, on an ongoing basis Rhema School can be supported financially.
Financial support via New Life Church. Gifts are sent to Rhema School on a regular basis.
